Not sure that it is the "one and only" way but it is generally accepted to be good for DNM purposes. Just ensure the Jabber client connects through TOR.
The video in link above is a bit old. Pidgin on Linux should have the necessary plugins for OTR without needing to install anything else.

I've always used signal and was recommended it on other sites. Anyone know of any vulnerabilities or issues with using it?

Its encrypted... think you can see numbers but I always use a burner phone. It just seemed to always be the one that was recommended to me

Signal is good as gold mate. [SCAM word detected here] has got all sorts of issues, a quick google should reveal its documented problems.
