Dark net drug lord’ Jamie Mannion smuggled garden gnomes -

An intelligent educational leader generated millions of dollars running the biggest drug importation and distribution operation a judge has ever seen - and he wrote about it in his autobiography.

Jamie Mannion was imprisoned for a dozen years at the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday for meticulously managing a highly sophisticated dark web enterprise that spanned New Zealand.

Mannion oversaw the importation of about 42kg of MDMA, 10kg of ketamine - which was baked into t-shirts - and 2kg of cocaine, plus lesser amounts of various other drugs. He kept a spreadsheet which recorded 1200 sales, and recruited four young men to help run the business.

The total value of the drugs amounted to about $15m and was the equivalent of more than 650,000 doses.

The father, of Tauranga, described himself as an entrepreneurial educational leader on LinkedIn, but acknowledged his criminal life in an autobiography titled “The Dark Net Drug Lord”, which did not help him in court.

He graduated from the University of Auckland and was previously the head of computing at the Unitec Institute of Technology, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Mannion involved innocent people looking for legitimate work in his operation by paying them to receive deliveries, which were later collected under false guises. He also sent drug packages to reputable businesses, later arranging their collection under the guise of a wrong delivery.

Crown prosecutor William Taffs said Mannion used encrypted apps, cryptocurrency, Prezzy cards, four phones, ten sim cards, a fake driver's licence and his underlings to further conceal his involvement in the enterprise.

He ran the drug operation essentially as a “small business” with other sub-businesses that directly sold the drugs, Taffs said. He pointed to the “incredibly significant” scale of the offending, with more than 50 confirmed imports, 36 of which were successful.

“A curiosity in this sentencing exercise, sir, is there are also the unknown drugs that were imported - those that were successful,” Taffs added.

It was suspected much of the proceeds of Mannion’s enterprise were hidden in cryptocurrency accounts he would access on his release from prison, the prosecutor said.

Taffs contrasted Mannion’s letter of remorse with his autobiography, which he said demonstrated his insight into the large-scale operation and the effects it was having on other people.

Defence lawyer Craig Tuck said the autobiography was written under the influence of drugs, and his client had since sobered up.

“This was a man that was consuming a large quantity of drugs and that could easily be characterised in such a grandiose way as white powder talking, or getting high on his own supply.”

Tuck said Mannion had poor self-regulation when under the influence of drugs, had a high dependency on drugs, but he had taken full responsibility. A report writer noted Mannion had a “credible and constructive rehabilitative trajectory”, he added.

Judge Raoul Neave awarded Mannion a total 50% sentence discount for his early guilty plea, prior good character, background factors and the impact prison would have on his children.

There was clear evidence he had an autism spectrum disorder, which Judge Neave said manifested itself in the “slightly obsessive” offending. It was the largest drug importation and distribution operation the judge had seen in his entire legal career.

Mannion was convicted of 32 charges related to the drug enterprise, including using a forged document and importing, possessing and supplying Class A, B and C drugs.

He had so many vendor names that I could only remember two of them Whitelines and Mollyshop. After reading more, I found out he was actually operating under another vendor name as well.

No way! that makes a lot of sense in hindsight though. Agreed, MollyShop was prime, but WhiteLines era was great too. He probably pushed it a bit far with the marketing though... Looking back, they were pretty similar logos haha. I remember freaking out when WhiteLines disappeared having ordered decent amounts, and was surprised people on here didn't seem to think it was a big deal.

Such a shame, he was so reliable, and never ventured into distributing methamphetamine which I respect.
