Version 3 onion names & server availability

The onion hostname in a URL defines a network path to reach a hidden server. Hidden service websites often provide multiple onion names for redundancy. By using a different onion name the traffic is routed through a different set of tor servers. A lot of servers provided by volunteers are involved in setting up the path so if the network path is failing, try a different onion name and then different servers will be used in the path.

The security benefits of V3 onions names are mostly to help the hidden service operator. For the client it doesn't really matter that much whether you connect using a V2 or V3 name. The biggest benefit for the client is better authenticity of the hidden service. It is feasible for an attacker to create an identical V2 onion name as another existing site so they can start receiving some or all that site's traffic. But the cost for this attack is very high, like around $100,000.

V3 onion names have a feature in tor that the hidden service operator can utilize so the web application can reject requests from specific client. Previously with V2 onions, all traffic looked the same to the server.

With Tormarket, prolonged web server problems will have a notice put out. But for tor network path problems (a problem with an onion name) no notice will be posted because the web server can be reached via different paths using a different onion name.
